Design process

Research

I reviewed user feedback from creators, discoverers, and matchmakers, alongside business goals like monetisation and AI integration. This helped surface key usability issues across the platform.

Prototype

I designed interactive, high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, tested them with real users, and worked closely with developers to bring them into production.

Validate

New features were validated through usability testing and Mixpanel data. I iterated quickly based on insights to improve engagement and usability.

What is Smash?

Smash is a platform that matches Film and TV creators with potential investors, making project discovery easier, smarter, and more transparent. It enables creators to build professional pitch presentations while protecting their IP and allows industry professionals to find curated projects that fit their briefs, all within one streamlined platform.

Smash serves:

By combining smart filtering with a focus on trust and privacy, Smash unlocks new opportunities for projects that might otherwise stay hidden.

Why Did Smash Need Design Work?

After the initial MVP launch, Smash needed to mature into a truly scalable platform. The goals for the redesign and feature expansion included:

  • Improving usability and navigation across all user types
  • Increasing user signups and onboarding efficiency
  • Introducing subscription-based monetisation (Smash Pro)
  • Integrating AI tools to strengthen project matching
  • Polishing the brand and platform experience to boost investor confidence

The early MVP had laid a strong foundation, but to drive growth and revenue, Smash needed a more intuitive, robust, and future-ready product.

My role

I joined Smash as the sole designer following the MVP and became a key figure in shaping the platform’s next evolution. Beyond design, my role expanded into project management, QA testing, and strategic input, working directly with founders, developers, and QA testers.

Where I made the biggest impact:

  • Designing the monetisation flow (Smash Pro) that enabled Smash to generate its first revenue and attract new investment interest
  • Improving conversion rates at signup and onboarding
  • Streamlining how creators submitted projects and how discoverers and matchmakers managed submissions

My relationship with Smash is ongoing, and I continue to support the team as we develop new features, improve the platform, and grow the user base.

Key Improvements

Call Out Flow

I designed a new call out system where matchmakers can create call outs on behalf of discoverers. Creators can browse and submit projects directly through the platform. Matchmakers can manage and curate submissions in an admin panel, sharing selected projects with discoverers both inside Smash and via automated emails.

Smash Pro

To introduce monetisation, I designed and implemented Smash Pro, a premium subscription tier offering additional features. New users get a free trial, with the option to upgrade or downgrade afterward. Existing users were carefully transitioned with legacy account options to preserve goodwill and introduce new paid features in a positive way.

Results at a Glance

  • Increased project submissions after launching the new call out flow
  • Higher discoverer engagement and willingness to pay for curated call outs
  • Successful launch of Smash Pro, generating the platform’s first direct revenue
  • Stronger user onboarding conversion rates, leading to more platform activity and growth
  • Continued momentum, including a recent record-breaking week with 125 new users and 108 new pitches created

A streamlined onboarding flow improves user activation by guiding creators through their first steps on the platform.

An improved pitch creation experience helps creators build professional, investor-ready presentations with ease.

An integrated AI feature that helps creators refine and strengthen their project synopses with smart, context-aware suggestions.

The updated marketplace showcases high-quality, ready-to-discover projects while protecting creator IP.
